As a Catholic I am opposed to abortion and the recent novelty of "gay marriage". Bishop Devine has spoken out forcefully on numerous occasions on those matters as well as Scotland's visceral sectarian culture. In doing so he is acting in accordance with his position;expounding Catholic moral and ethical teaching. He does so in a society in which freedom of speech, freedom to dissent, is supposedly valued. He is entitled to express his view even if it upsets. From what I have read, the full text is not avalable just the purple bits, he has made no direct comparison between the Shoah/Holocaust and the killing of the unborn. The reference was to imagery of the horror in both cases being shocking. The Brighton incident involving a graphic image of the sort seems to have been considered too gut churning for the general public to view. As animal rights activists use images of dismembered and bloodied animals in their campaigns I fail to see why some are so thin skinned. Plenty of biased, inaccurate and ignorant stuff is published regarding Catholics and Catholicism. I just wince and get on with life nevertheless. Prof Dawkins et al are entitled to their views. May not like the tone, the language etc but that's democracy. I shall refrain from dealing with the aside about the Church covering up so called "paedophilia".It is simply too tiresome when in the media fact is so often subverted by antipathy to make more interesting copy.
